The Magic Of My First Pet #ShedHappens

The Magic Of My First Pet #ShedHappens

This post is sponsored by Swiffer® and the BlogPaws Professional Pet Blogger Network. I am helping spread the word about Swiffer, and donate ALL proceeds to help animal welfare, adoption and spay and neutering. We here at MattieDog® only share information we feel is relevant to our readers. Swiffer is not responsible for the content of this article. Memories of a Child’s First Pet What are the memories of your first childhood pet? I recall being young, playing at my neighbor Shelly’s house and realizing that her dog was going to have puppies. For the next two weeks, which probably felt like two years to my parents, I begged for one of the puppies. I was just a child… so my begs turned to pleading, bargaining, cajoling, and even a fit or two. I wanted to have something playful and fluffy in my life. My dad didn’t appear to be falling for it, so imagine my surprise when he took me to pick out one of the pups! He caved. In retrospect he was likely a tired, middle-aged parent. I now know how he felt, at this stage in my life I can relate to his breaking point… But at the time I capitalized on the opportunity, and I was thrilled. This was the magic of my first pet. Fast forward to today, having gone through this with my own family, words cannot describe how lucky we are to have this ‘new’ creation called Swiffer®….because, let me tell you #shedhappens! I don’t know how my parents did it, cleaned up after our first dog without having a Swiffer Sweeper or Swiffer Duster. Bless their 1970’s hearts. I don’t think I...

NYC is 3519 Miles from Huslia Alaska #BetterWithPets

This post is sponsored by Nestle Purina® and the BlogPaws Professional Pet Blogger Network. We here at MattieDog® donate compensation received for helping spread the word about the #BetterWithPets campaign to animal rescue, adoption and spay and neuter organizations. We only share information relevant to our readers. Purina is not responsible for the content of this article. New York City is one of the biggest, most expansive cities in the world. A few weeks ago, I attended the  Purina® #BetterWithPets summit in NYC. Who would have known that in one of the biggest cities in the world I would have learned about one of the smallest cities on the globe, and that this juxtaposition would become a paradigm shift in how I think about our relationships with pets. Sitting in the Brooklyn conference center, recognizing that NYC is 3,519 miles from Huslia, Alaska, I began to understand that human-animal bonds come in all shapes and sizes. I was exposed to a different type of human-animal bond thanks to Purina and the #BetterWithPets summit. Is There Only One Way? Even now, two weeks later, my mind keeps returning to Dr. Arleigh Reynolds’ discussion about George Attla and the Frank Attla Youth and Sled Dog Care Program. To me, dogs are best friends, no need to work. Dogs, for me, are my fuzzy family members whose only ‘job’ is to give and receive unconditional love. Emotional connection seems easily transferable with these established rules. But maybe how I am with my dogs isn’t reflective of all of America, and certainly not representative of the working dogs of Huslia, Alaska. But just because we incorporate dogs differently into...
Training With Farm to Bowl Open Farm

Training With Farm to Bowl Open Farm

When you’re a pet-parent and live in the Pacific Northwest you learn to train your dog indoors when the outdoors turns rainy. We clear the living room from clutter, set up steps or use little stools and pull out the organic cotton dog toys, and get ready for inside training. Typically we spend 30-60 minutes practicing ‘fetch and step-up.’ This is a fun game of retrieving one of the cotton toys by name, and carrying it up and down the steps. For a little motivation we use quality dog treats or food, and soon everyone is in the throws of fun, interactive learning. After each successful carry, we space the toys and steps further and further apart until they are separated the entire distance of the room. Our pups benefit from the physical and mental activity. Take it from me, this activity is a God send when it rains for 48-hours straight, like it did this weekend! Healthy Lifestyle Includes Your Dog’s Food We’re focused on living a quality, healthy lifestyle and the same is true for our dogs. That’s why we had to try Open Farm® dog food for our training sessions. Open Farm is a family run company with a focus on farm-to-bowl, grain-free meals that are comprised of premium proteins, and high-quality non GMO fruit and vegetables. Only farmers with a commitment to quality, all-natural sustainability, and humane practices  are welcomed in to the Open Farm team. It is commendable that Open Farm is the first Certified Humane® pet food, meaning that 100% of the meat and poultry used in the Open Farm foods is certified by the HFACP (Humane Farm Animal Care Program),...
